My name is Effie Gardner and I have been in full time private practice as a hypnotherapist, stress management consultant, counsellor, life coach and nlp practitioner since March 1996.

Finding direction and confidence is about managing and controlling stress effectively. The adverse effects of stress are well documented and how they cause: Anxiety nerves, Mood swings, Despair, Depression, Phobias, Procrastination, Panic and anxiety attack, Stage fear, Lack of confidence and self-esteem, Relationship problems, Grieving, Limiting habit like fear of flying, Self image, Assertiveness and motivation issues as well as acute exam, test and interview nerves.

Baffling and inconsistent within western society is just why stress would be so prevalent or how stress directly impacts on management of pain and illness. Gaining understanding and adjusting our stress levels will make it possible for most people to transform their lives, relationships and careers. Instead of our ingenious technology and advanced inventions which promised to save efforts and improve the lot of humanity, these actually do quite the reverse. Because human environments are changing at unprecedented speed we can barely keep-up with our external progress. Our traditional support systems are eroded or almost none existent and we demands ourselves to cope in unsustainable isolation. Being either emotionally unwell or having personal problems are not usually detectable with the necked eye and we have almost become experts hiding emotional, physiological and physical needs/signs from ourselves and others. Many of us are so good at this that even experts can miss our stress signals. In an ideal world our  nearest and dearest (who  could be finding their own stress difficult to deal with), are unable or unprepared to assist even when we would let them. We are our own harshest critics, Some even feel embarrassed and fearful to ask for needed support. We are waiting for others to declare that 'indeed we have every right to feel the way we do' before doing something to resolve concerns. As we bravely soldier on we just prolong suffering. If our physical symptoms were treated in the same way as emotional and personal issues, the consequences would be dire.

The 'Fight or Flight' response comes into action even if we cannot detect a threat with our five senses. However, our sixth sense responds to past, present or future concerns as if they are taking place now. This is both a healthy and normal response when there is an actual perceived threat that will quickly dissipate when the danger is over. This is nature's way of assisting the self preservation of all life forms. But when there isn't a perceived danger it will  use the same amount of energy and stress is the body's by product, because adrenaline cannot dissipate and this sends constant requests to our brain to be on alert. Reduction of stress will reduce distress levels. Other related problems will directly be positively affected, while illness and the recuperation time required minimises the possibility of complications before, during and after treatment. Prolonged stress can feel like being in a pressure cooker and the energy must go somewhere or be eliminated.

Every attempt was made to accurately represent treatments, how it could feel to many and what the signs are. But, each person is a unique and my pages do not intend to state that this is the universal truth.

Who would benefit from finding direction and confidence or resolving mind, body, emotional issues and life challenges...?

Naturally... they are men and women from all walks of life:

  •        Legal and health professions.

  •        Carers and homemakers.

  •        Cricket and rugby players.

  •        Mature and young students.

  •        Managers, Trainers, Coaches and Human resources specialists.

  •        Musicians, Actors, Writers, Painters, Sculptors, Fashion designers or individuals from other creative arts.

  •        IT professionals.

  •        Amateur or professional Athletes and Sports people.

  •        Architects, Engineers and Builders.

  •        Office and telesales professionals.

  •        Minicab, Taxi and Truck drivers.

  •        Counsellors and Consultants.

  •        Practitioners of complementary medicine and alternative healing.

  •        Those in employment and/or self-employment.

  •        People between careers and/or retirement.

  •        Individuals from all walks of life, all of whom want and deserve happiness, well-being and a satisfying life experience.

The only negative inference about asking for professional assistance is fear. There is no more need to suffer silently from emotional distress than from physical symptoms! After all we are human and at times we are not as strong as we would like to be. We are individual and believe it or not we are all doing our level best at all times in order to make life more fulfilling, satisfying and as happy as we would like it to be.

Most of the time we just get on with life without noticing that we actually do extraordinary deeds all of the time. We tend to take ourselves for granted, never stopping to appreciate ourselves or pay attention to our constant  internal dialogue. We never say take the time to evaluate what we like, enjoy, will make us happy or proud of ourselves. But the amount of time invested in negative self talk is endless at best and in challenging times this is never ending. Feeling down, low in energy and lacking that vital get-up and go is our mind/body communication asking for our own mercy.

Reducing moderate stress is possible with a little self-help. When this is ignored for a long time, professional help would be much more appropriate. Professional support could significantly shorten recovery time and make it easier to get through difficulties. For treatment to bring satisfactory results for the person in treatment, the techniques applied must progress at an individual and comfortable pace before becoming free to enjoy life again or for the first time.

Is the mind a friend or a foe ?

Our mind is 99% our best friend but the human mind might appear rather complex (which is partly true of course) or seem as if it is outside its owner's control. Reaching our full potentials and being happy is what the mind is designed for. States of being stressed, depressed, lacking confidence or feeling anxious demands much more energy than experiencing positive states of mind. We can purposefully re-direct our mind to act precisely as we need it, want it and desire it, especially when this is enhancing our life experiences.

My training is based on the teachings of Dr Milton H. Erickson, D. Croydon Hammond Ph.D. and Dr Michael Yapco.

People who worked with me in the past often remarked that accessing their inner resources is much less challenging, painful or scary than they thought initially. Naturally, the benefits of treatment are an integral part of a logical therapeutic process, that is easy to follow and maintain. My therapy style works naturally and the techniques are holistic and based on the teaching of Dr Milton H. Erickson, who lead by example. He impressed upon students that everyone can and deserves to be happy, can enjoy a meaningful life and acquire new skills of being content. He advocated that there is no need to suffer personal and emotional pain silently anymore than physical ones. Milton Erickson believed that the human mind is the servant of its human rather then us being driven by it.

Stuff does happen in life and some experiences are more upsetting or unsettling than others and vice-versa. However, therapy is unlike 'New-Year' resolutions or turning a virtual life into a real one. All therapeutic procedures aim to empower the person in treatment. Humans require a little time and commitment to reach therapy's successful treatment conclusion. The healing journey can be subtle, profound or cathartic and possible even for circumstances that appear insurmountable at first. The following is a partial list of issues people consulting me have successfully resolved:

  •        Stress management and/or control.

  •        Overcoming all known exam, test, interview nerves and anxiety.

  •        Developing and improving existing abilities and talents.

  •        Increased relaxation abilities and the elimination of tension.

  •        Recovery from stress, anxiety or depression symptoms.

  •        Overcoming stage fright and public speaking nerves.

  •        Promoting a positive mental attitude.

  •        Resolution of work or relationship related stress.

  •        Overcoming insomnia and developing restful sleep patterns.

  •        Harmony of body, mind and emotions.
  •        Healing and recovery of the inner child.

  •        Support for increased self-confidence and assertiveness.

  •        Improved overall quality of life and intuitive awareness.

  •        Improving the quality of personal and social circumstances (even inadvertently attracted into ones life.)

  •        Resolution and elimination of shyness, phobias, guilt, anger or panic attacks.

  •        Improved decisiveness, memory and self-application.

  •        Alleviation of allergies, hay-fever, asthma, nail biting, irritable bowel syndrome and stammering.

  •        Increased focusing and concentration.

  •        Facilitation of a better career path.

  •        Improved reflexes, pain control and/or management (including chronic pain).

  •        Elimination of limiting habits, phobias and other self-defeating sequences.

  •        Increased self-organisation, motivation and efficiency.

  •        Resolution of self-image conflicts.

  •        Improved interpersonal relationships at home, work and socially.

  •        Coping with and overcoming bereavement.

  •        Elimination of allergies, skin disorders and headaches (including migraines).

  •        Strengthening the immune system.

  •        Elimination of jealousy, lack of self-esteem, lack of concentration.

  •        Increased ability to earn and hold onto money.

  •        Assisting, supporting and promoting own bodys healing capacities during or after illness.

Not all life challenges and circumstances are welcomed but they take place anyway

Many regard change as something best avoided, put off and/or feared. Others bravely learn (with help or alone) to accept changes as an opportunity for creating something new or even to plan for it. We all accomplish great things without external help or pausing to appreciate ourselves for our achievements. For example, have you ever seen a child's face successfully tying their shoe lace for the first time? Can you even remember doing this yourself or what a feeling that was?

In adulthood most of us learn to a lesser or greater degree to dismiss competence as being a fluke or a stroke of good luck. Nevertheless, closer inspection shows that every small or grand feat is born from child like play. Just like the first spoonful a baby puts into their mouth independently or riding a bicycle unaided, those were great changes and we prevailed. You might be surprised that fear requires learning too.

Therefore, when life isn't as good as we like it to be, we can acquire the right skills for ourselves and turn things around. Acquiring skills of well-being, healing circumstances and enjoying life is an integral part of treatment. but when feeling down it is not easy to be philosophical or to have that needed get-up and go attitude. With our lives getting busier and technology progressing at an ever-increasing speed, it is useful to pause and remind ourselves that we humans unlike equipment are made organically. We need time to adjust, keep pace with technical advancement or evolution and sustain our humanity. While going through our day, we need to relax and enjoy the simple but essential pleasures of life.

The only surprise is the fact that it takes us far longer than we realise before we are stressed out or reach a breaking point without the ability to say how we got into that state. Being under moderate stress can be good for us, useful, healthy or even exhilarating. We can maintain stressful states for long periods without experiencing adverse side affects. What stamina could endure at ten or twenty years of age, is not quite the same at thirty or sixty, nor is it as healthy. Being motivated and ambitious is one thing. Driving ourselves relentlessly is quite another matter. Ignoring our natural and normal human cycles for too long, can tip a delicate balance from moderate stress, to stress related illness, depression, back pain, heart disease, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome or many other uncomfortable symptoms.

Treatments presented here are adaptable to most circumstances

  •        Would you like to feel better from now on?

  •        Do you frequently experience ‘the blues’?

  •        Do you experience an ongoing sadness?

  •        Do you have a pessimistic outlook?

  •        Do you frequently have feelings of deep unease, boredom, unhappiness and internal misery?

  •        Are you lacking gratitude in your daily life or have no interest in things?

  •        Are you an individual who wants to feel better as you outgrow earlier situations?

If your answer to any of the above is yes, you could be pleasantly surprised to know that being contented, happy and generally well are skills that can be easily learned and re-learned. Because one treatment style is more suitable for some than for other people, my approach incorporates a number of treatments. No one method serves as a silver bullet for all problems, ills, challenges and for everyone in the world. Restoring or healing ourselves will require more than one hour’s session to reach the meaningful treatment aims. That is one of the principal reasons I do not provide ‘one off treatment sessions.

One of the most important thing in deciding who could provide you with the best professional assistance is by calling a therapist to find out if you feel at ease talking with them is they are in rapport with you and your problems. It is understandable that the first telephone enquiry could feel a little unnerving. However, the first call forms an integral part of a free initial consultation and ensures that your concerns can be answered and that what you are aiming to resolve is within my field of expertise. Talking about your treatment's aim briefly, help you make an informed decision whether you are comfortable talking with me about your important issues and when an appointment is arranged the session will then be of benefit to you from the start. In all consultations, clients will be encouraged and supported to resolve important concern, but without prolonging treatment unnecessarily. Every session builds on the previous one, so by setting achievable and meaningful goals even before the start of treatment for living peacefully with self and/or others. Progress will be set and maintained at each client's personal and comfortable pace.
