NLP

Nlp stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Nlp is therapist best empowerment tool as it is an effective self-empowerment assistant.

Similarities between NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and Life coaching is uncanny but with trivial vocabulary difference. Nlp was created in the early 1970s by Richard Bandler a computer and linguistic student and his professor John Grinder. Richard Bandler based his university dissertation on Dr Milton H Erickson the father of modern hypnotherapy and Virginia Satir an outstanding family therapist. 

NLP was popularised by Anthony Robbins through his book Awaken the Giant Within. Language is the most potent means of communication for humanity. In fact NLP follows hypnotherapy, stress management, counselling or other ethical treatment with the same insight. The way we talk about ourselves to others and the words we use to talk to ourselves creates our reality and just by altering a word in our vocabulary or just the tonal emphasis we place on a word we can alter our entire life. When berating our self often enough, we may soon lose our self-confidence or even the will to live. Conversely, it can be done the other way round and the results can surpass our expectations. For example:

If we change one single word in our vocabulary, our entire world can change with it. Just by telling ourselves often enough that we are stupid, our mind will reply, ‘yes, you are stupid’ and then progress to deliver back to us stupid experiences. Very soon we start feeling more stupid than we ever imagined ourselves to be. However, if then we start telling ourselves that actually we are pretty wise, clued up and/or that we are successful in all the endeavours we set our hands to, our mind will say, ‘yes, you are pretty wise, clued up and/or successful in all the endeavours you set your hands to’, then the mind will progress to give us wise, clued up decisions and/or you to start succeed in your endeavours. In other words, our minds do not make judgements or change what we tell ourselves and are a basic yes machines we control for better or worse. Hypnotherapy, Past life regression and Reincarnation work on similar principles, but treatment dialogue will be very different, though the results of treatment might be equal. In hypnotherapy and nlp with a client who wants to lose weight, stop smoking or be confident, we do not focus on deprivation but on how much they:

  • will be enjoying having lashings of healthy food, with fresh fruits and vegetables to eat daily
  • wear fabulous clothes, their home smelling of lavender with a new relationship and/or increase in wages as a surprise benefit
  • seeing themselves learning and bragging about a new skill and suddenly the boss is promoting them, plus a wage increase without being asked

NLP was not only the most empowering self-development approach in my life, but also in the lives of hundreds of people consulting with me over the last twenty-two years and it is still wonderful to witness how people can turn their lives around in a few short weeks or surpass treatment’s expectations.

Counselling, Cognitive behaviour therapy ‘CBT’, psychology, stress management, nlp, life coaching, past life regression, hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis and mindfulness carry different titles for talking therapies but not dissimilar to treatments with hypnosis. Depression, Anxiety, Panic attack, Self-image conflict, various Addictions, Weight control, Gastric band or Stop smoking are names for challenges that may respond well to one treatment but not to another. An experienced hypnotherapist is perfectly capable of dealing with such issues but someone who is only trained as ‘Gastric Band’ or ‘Stop Smoking’ expert would be unable to assist a person to manage/control their stress, anger or addiction.

When choosing to consult a therapist it is more important to feel at ease, discussing your important issues with them than their office being five minutes walking distance from your home, their website having the latest IT gizmos, their fee being cheapest/astronomical or inside a luxury apartment, council house or community centre.

It is important for you to understand what qualifications, experience and field of expertise the person you consult holds. Asking the practitioner you approach about their work is the best way to ascertain suitability. For example, Hypnotherapy, cognitive behaviour hypnotherapy and Clinical hypnotherapy do say that they use hypnosis in treatment, but might be somewhat confusing since these disciplines require extensive and specialised training. A medical, psychological and psychiatrically qualified individual can offer CBT and Clinical treatments that include hypnosis. CBT psychologists can include hypnotherapy in their range of treatments if they choose without the terminology of Clinical treatment unless they are qualified in medical, psychiatric and/or psychiatric faculties. The title might inadvertently be inaccurate. CBT  or Cognitive Behaviour Hypnotherapy cannot progress. Cognitive means being in a conscious state and hypnosis cannot happen whilst clinical implies being medically qualified.

To avoid confusion, my title is that of a hypnotherapist, though my expertise, experience and training are pretty advanced following 20 years in practice.
